Choosing the material

The common choices around Colorado Springs are tan and buff granite gravel, squeegee, breeze or crusher fines for pathways, rounded river cobble for dry creek beds and drainage features, and larger boulders as accents. Angular gravel locks together and stays put on slopes; rounded cobble looks softer but migrates. Lava rock is lightweight and holds heat, which some plants hate. One of our reviews came from a job where matching the existing rock exactly was the whole point — that kind of match is worth getting right, because a colour that fights the house is the thing people regret most.

When rock is the right answer — and when it isn't

Rock is close to a permanent decision, so it is worth being deliberate:

• Choose rock for xeric and native plantings, for full-sun south and west exposures, for anything you want to install once, and for defensible space near the house.
• Choose mulch for perennials, annuals, vegetables and anything with thin leaves and shallow roots — it holds soil moisture, moderates temperature swings and breaks down into organic matter that improves our clay over time.
• Do not put rock against a south-facing wall and then plant something tender in it; that is a heat trap.
• Do not treat landscape fabric under rock as permanent. It buys a few good years, then degrades as roots grow through it.
• Expect weeds either way — dust and organic debris settle between stones and colonise them. Rock is lower maintenance, not no maintenance.

Most yards use both

Nearly every landscape we build ends up with rock in the sunny, low-water, low-traffic zones and mulch around the plantings that need it, divided by steel edging so the two never migrate into each other. Depth matters more than material in both cases: too thin and weeds come through, too thick and you suffocate roots. We install to the depth the planting calls for, with edging that keeps it where we put it.
