Monument sits about a thousand feet above central Colorado Springs, and the calendar reflects it. The last spring frost typically lands in late May and the first fall frost can arrive by mid-September, which cuts the reliable growing window down hard. Planting too early is the most common mistake we see up here — a warm week in April is not spring. It also means plant selection has to be genuinely cold-hardy rather than borrowed from a Denver or Pueblo list.
Palmer Divide wind and snow load
The Tri-Lakes area catches weather that Colorado Springs misses. Wind coming across the Palmer Divide dries out new plantings and shreds anything with a soft leaf, and this stretch reliably picks up more snow than the city. Both are design inputs: windbreak planting and fencing on the exposed side of a property, structures and pergolas built for the snow that will sit on them, and beds mulched deeply enough that the wind does not strip them by June.
Sandy, fast-draining soil on bigger lots
North of the city the soil turns sandier and more granitic than the clay in town, with better natural drainage and less organic matter. Water moves through it quickly, so irrigation needs to run differently — shorter, more frequent cycles rather than long soaks — and beds want compost worked in before planting. Lots up here also tend to be larger, which usually means deciding which parts of the property get an irrigated, maintained landscape and which are better left as native grass.

What holds up to the wind up here?
Tough, locally proven species with small or needled leaves, planted so that they shelter each other rather than standing alone. A windbreak of evergreens or a well-placed fence on the prevailing side does more for a yard in Monument than any individual plant choice. New plantings also need staking and steady water through their first season.
